and stayed. It took me a while to name it. It usually does. I am better at feeling something than at saying it, which may be why Travis got to me first. A man walks out of the desert and cannot speak. Not because he has nothing to say, but because there are no words for where he has been. I knew that silence.<\/p><p>The feeling was older than the films. For a long time I had carried a quiet sense that there had to be more, that I was not yet who I could be. That kind of hunger does not stay in its own room. It changes how you see everything around it. Things that used to be enough start to feel like time slipping away. It can be obsessive. It can make you distant from people who did nothing wrong. But it is honest, and it is how you drift away from a home without ever packing a bag.<\/p><p>This is what nobody tells you about changing: it is quiet. There is no moment where you leave. You just notice one day that your thoughts would be unfamiliar to the people closest to you. That you have started speaking a language nobody around you learned. And that you do not want to go back to the person who spoke theirs.<\/p><i class=\"ga-ep-rule\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><p>That is why one scene in The Odyssey hit harder than any battle. Odysseus sits on the stairs with Penelope and tells her he did not want to come home after what he had done. Twenty years, a war, the whole sea, and the real obstacle turns out to be him. Home was still there. He was no longer sure he belonged in it. I understood that more than I wanted to. Not because of anything I did in a war, but because I had become someone the old place had no room for.<\/p><p>Odysseus answers it the way heroes do. He takes the house back, clears out what does not belong, proves he is worthy and walks away hand in hand with the person who waited. It is a beautiful answer. It assumes home is still there to be won. And it assumes you still want what you are fighting for.<\/p><p>Travis answers differently. Behind the one-way mirror he finally sees himself through someone else's eyes, and what he sees is not the hero of the story. He is not a good man, and the film never pretends he is. But there is a step between being that person and seeing it, and another between seeing it and letting go. He takes both. He gives back what he can, and drives into the night. Exile is not his punishment. It is the most honest thing he has left.<\/p><p>I recognise both men, and I am neither. For a while I wanted to be Odysseus: to change and still be welcomed back, to keep the old life without having to become the old person. But Ithaca does not always wait. Sometimes there is no house left to reclaim. And sometimes, like Travis, you know something is over before you can say it out loud, and the only thing left is to accept it.<\/p><i class=\"ga-ep-rule\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><p>There is one image in Paris, Texas I keep returning to. The only thing Travis owns is a photo of an empty lot where he believes his life began. Nothing was ever built on it, and still he carries it everywhere. I think most people have a lot like that. Not a real place, but a picture of a life you were sure you were heading towards. The longer you carry it, the harder it gets to tell whether you miss the place or only the picture.<\/p><p>I still say I am going home. I am just not sure that is true anymore. So what is home, if it is not the place you left? Odysseus says it is a person. Travis says it is knowing where you no longer belong. I am not sure yet. Maybe it is someone. Maybe it is being alone, where nobody needs to understand you. I am most at home when I am alone, and I do not know if that is an answer or just another island to hide on.<\/p><p>If home is a person, then it is something that can change its mind, and so can you. If it is being alone, it is a place where nobody misunderstands you, but also one where nobody really knows you. And if it is neither, then maybe it is something I have not found a word for yet. I keep turning these over, and none of them sits still long enough to become an answer. That scares me more than I like to admit. But it is also strangely exciting. Nothing is decided anymore. Every road out of here is still open, and I genuinely do not know which one I will take.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"ga-ep-after ga-reveal\"><p class=\"ga-ep-last\">Not belonging somewhere anymore is not the same as losing it.
