For a moment Paris, Texas looks like a western: a lone figure, an empty landscape, a past nobody knows. Wim Wenders spends the rest of the film taking that image apart. Travis is not a stoic hero coming back from somewhere. He is a man who has lost his voice, because language stops where the damage starts.<\/p><p>He has been gone for four years, and the world did not hold his place. His brother Walt takes him to Los Angeles, to the house where Travis's son Hunter has been growing up without him. Life there did not stop when he left. It rearranged itself around the gap. Travis arrives as a guest in a life that used to be his, watching home movies of a man he no longer recognises.<\/p><p>The only thing he owns is a vacant lot in Paris, Texas. He bought it because he believes that is where he was conceived, and he carries a photo of it like proof. It is the purest image of home in the film: a place he has never lived, empty, chosen for a beginning he cannot remember. A foundation that only exists as a picture.<\/p><p>Slowly, and with real effort, he earns back Hunter's trust. Walt gave the boy stability; Travis can only offer what he has, which is mostly feeling. That small reconnection matters. It means that what Travis does at the end is not running away. It is a choice made by someone who finally has something to lose.<\/p><blockquote class=\"ga-ep-quote ga-reveal\"><p>The cruel irony is that he finally found his voice again, and he used it to say goodbye.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Then he finds Jane, working in a peep show in Houston, behind a one-way mirror. He can see her; she cannot see him. They speak through a phone, a few feet apart. It is the most exact picture of estrangement I know. On his second visit he turns his chair away from the glass and tells their story as if it happened to two other people: a man whose love turned into jealousy and closed around a woman until she had to get out. Then Jane tells her side, and Travis has to listen to what his love did to her.<\/p><p>That is where the film turns. Travis is not a good man in this story, and the film does not pretend otherwise. What he had was obsessive, and it was toxic. But there is a step between being that person and seeing it, and Travis takes it. In The Odyssey the house was corrupted from outside, and there were suitors to defeat. Here there is no one to fight. The thing that went wrong was him.<\/p><p>So he does the one thing Odysseus never has to consider. He brings Hunter to Jane, watches their reunion from outside, and drives off into the night.
