AI ethics you hear about belongs to the companies building it. This piece is about the smaller, closer question that is actually yours: how do you use this thing without lying and without letting it hollow you out? The rules are still being written, but the shape of a decent answer is already clear.<\/p><div class=\"ga-ch-body\"><p>There is a big version of AI ethics, the one about who trained on whose work, who profits, who gets watched. That matters and it gets its own piece later. This one is smaller and more personal, and it is the second thing squarely in your hands. The last piece was about how well you use the tool. This one is about how rightly, and like the first it is fully yours, a matter of your own conduct with something that will happily let you cut every corner you point it at. Nobody is going to hand you a rulebook for this. So here is what the last few years have taught, told straight.<\/p>\n      <h2>You stay accountable for what you sign<\/h2>\n      <p>Start with the rule that keeps proving itself, usually the hard way. When people get into real trouble with AI, it is almost never for using it. It is for not checking it and then not owning it.<\/p>\n      <p>The case everyone in law now knows is the one where two lawyers filed a brief full of court decisions that did not exist. A chatbot had invented them, confident citations, names that sounded real, all fake, and the lawyers filed them without looking. That alone would have been bad. What actually sank them was what came next, they defended the fake cases when questioned and did not come clean until a judge forced it. The court was explicit, using the tool was not the sin, the sin was not verifying and then not being honest. Since then the same story has repeated in the hundreds, at solo practices and at large respected firms alike, and the pattern never changes. One lawyer got suspended not really for the fake citations but for blaming them on an intern before admitting the truth.<\/p>\n      <p>You are not filing legal briefs, but the rule is the same wherever your name goes on something. The AI is not accountable. It cannot be. It has no stake, no license to lose, no reputation to answer for, and it will state a falsehood in the same calm voice it uses for the truth, as the last series showed. That means the accountability does not get shared, it stays entirely with you. Whatever you send, publish or submit with your name on it, you vouched for, whether or not you read it. That is not a burden the tool added. It is the one it cannot take.<\/p>\n      <h2>Be honest about the help<\/h2>\n      <p>The second rule is disclosure, and it is genuinely unsettled, so I will tell you where it is firm and where it is still soft.<\/p>\n      <p>The firm part is that hiding AI behind a fake human face is where people get burned. A sports magazine got caught publishing articles under invented writers with headshots generated by AI. The wrongdoing there was not that a machine helped, it was the fabricated person built to hide it. The emerging norm across writing, research and journalism is simple, do not pass off machine work as a human's, and when AI did real work on something, say so in proportion to how much it did.<\/p>\n      <p>The soft part is exactly how much to say, and here I would not tie yourself in knots. Nobody needs a disclaimer because a tool fixed your grammar, any more than you credit spellcheck. But when AI shaped the substance, the argument, the analysis, the bulk of the words, honesty means not letting people believe it was all you. The test I use is whether someone would feel misled if they knew. If yes, say it. If it would not change how they read the thing, you are fine. Schools have mostly given up trying to catch AI use with detection software, it flags the innocent too often and misses the guilty, so they are shifting to asking people to just be upfront. That shift lands the responsibility back where it belongs, on your honesty rather than someone's scanner.<\/p>\n      <p>I have had to make this call on my own writing. AI is woven into how this whole site got built, and I decided early that I would rather say that plainly than have anyone wonder. The words and the judgments are mine, the reach is what the tools added, and telling you that costs me nothing and keeps the whole thing honest. Your line might sit somewhere else. The point is to draw it on purpose, not to back into it.<\/p>\n      <h2>Use it so you grow, not so you rot<\/h2>\n      <p>Here is the ethics people miss, because it has no victim but you. Lean on this tool the wrong way and it does not just do your work, it quietly takes the ability to do it.<\/p>\n      <p>This is the difference between using AI to build yourself up and using it to slowly stand in for you. Both feel identical in the moment, the work gets done either way. Over months they are opposite. The person who has it explain the thing until they understand it walks away sharper. The person who has it hand over the answer so they never have to understand walks away a little more dependent each time, until the skill they thought they still had is gone. Use it as a tutor and a sparring partner and you grow. Use it as a place to dump the thinking you would rather not do, and you get exactly what you asked for, a life where you cannot do that thinking anymore.<\/p>\n      <h2>Know when not to reach for it<\/h2>\n      <p>Which leads to the last rule, the shortest one. Some things are the point, not the chore. The hard first draft that teaches you what you actually think. The problem you learn by struggling through. The note that means something because you, not a model, found the words. There is no law against handing those to AI, and sometimes you should. But do it with your eyes open, because the friction you are removing is occasionally the whole value. Not everything slow is waste.<\/p>\n      <p>None of this is a code you can follow on autopilot, and that is the honest truth of it. It is judgment, applied case by case, by a person who stayed awake. Stay accountable, stay honest and use it in the direction of growth. Do that and you can use this thing hard without losing yourself in it.<\/p>\n      <p>That covers how you use it and how honestly, the first two things in your hands. But that last worry, the quiet cost to yourself, is bigger than a rule of personal conduct. It reaches all the way down to whether you keep the mind you do all your thinking and deciding with, and there is real evidence, cutting both ways, about what leaning on AI actually does to it.
